Mr Porter, Mr Cub Fur, Mr Cub Chain, Mr Pirouette– individual personalities assigned to the range of bags and purses on offer from New Zealand’s most covetable accessories range, Deadly Ponies. This season’s collection- Sand Castle is inspired by ‘Persian Royalty with a pinch of tumeric.’
What you’ll find is anything from large lambskin classic carry-alls and totes, to small pouches made of the softest deer-skin wrapped in goats fur, and this season they’ve also introduced suede. With each collection DP offer a couple of statement colours, and this season; cobalt and tangerine are interspersed with the classics.

Following on from the completion of his design degree, Deadly Ponies designer Liam Bowden has been making bags for around seven years, taking inspiration from the craft of traditional saddle makers. With the quality of construction and luxe materials, the brand have quickly garnered international attention from buyers and taste makers alike. Liam certainly has an impeccable eye for detail, structure, shape and colour, but he’s also ambitious, hard working, and in tune with his target market.
I had the pleasure of meeting Liam last year (allocating myself a fun work assignment) to take a trip to his downtown Auckland studio, where I had the opportunity to find out more about his creative process, the challenges of working with natural materials, and treading the hard yards to make luxury items in NZ. Oh…and I got to stroke some of that buttery soft deer nappa too! Listen here:
