Back to reality, and being that I’m here to talk ‘fashion,’ I’m pleased to say that Karen Walker’s Utopia is much more fluid and cohesive than my over-active, and highly fragmented imagination. In her S/S 14 collection which recently showed at NYFW, she takes her modern preppy look to the East with soft, drapey trench coats, relaxed trousers and tunics in a paisley-eque printed silk: here tangerine and apricot intermingle with turquoise/aqua, pastel pink and blue, providing a chic East-Meets West weekend-luxe vibe. Her signature clean-line aesthetic still shines through, with tailored summer-weight blazers, boxy style jackets and shirts, along with paper bag- waisted shorts. She’s also incorporated sports luxe into the collection with this season’s must have item- the bomber jacket– hers is a loose, over-sized fit (below centre).
Admittedly, I eagerly await Karen Walker’s new collection each season. Like many KW fans, I’ll peruse the look book for months before the garments hit the racks and peg the looks/ garments I’m coveting with the hope to purchase the item(s) in my size (as smaller sizes sell out no sooner than they become available). As much as I love the look of the prints in the SS14 collection, nothing jumps out at me this time around. Not to say that I don’t like any of it. I do. But boxy cuts are terrible on my small frame, and the printed trousers (love the maroon ones), will undoubtedly make me look like I’ve been swallowed by MC Hammer’s pants. Last season almost had me in tears, as I bought a couple of things online and had to return them because the cuts were huge!* A size US 2/ NZ 6 left me swimming in fabric, and KW only does a small run of a size 0. The colours in this collection aren’t so much in my palette either which is the first thing that hit me, but the pastels I can get away with. So whilst I wish there was something I was coveting from this collection, it’ll have to be a game of wait and see.
Karen Walker has also been collaborating with accessories label Benah on a handbag range, along with BePositive (sneakers), which will be available in NZ from February 2014.
