So far, winter has been a mix of either sunshine or lots and lots of rain. The sunny days are deceptive. With clear blue skies I always feel optimistic and end up leaving the house insufficiently dressed. As for the wet, grey days it’s always a bit grim leaving the comfort of home (and our central heating) and venturing out into freeze-your-face-off, wind whipping at your hair and rain lashing at your face kind of weather. But as long as you have a good quality umbrella, leather boots (which have been waterproofed) and a thick winter coat, then you’re generally good to go. Having bought two rain coats ahead of winter this year, I was excited about the prospect of wet weather, yet the coats have barely made an outing because they’re just not warm enough to cut it on treacherous Wellington winter days. Sigh.
So my picks (above) are not so much winter essentials but ‘winter pick me ups’. A cute dress in a quirky print, ankle boots in a neutral wear-with-anything colour (with a chunky heel that will keep your feet out of those puddles), a bright tote instantly washes away the winter blues, a stylish felt hat will keep the rain off your face (provided that the wind doesn’t whip it right off your head!) and a classic rose gold watch with a masculine edge will see you through many outfit options. And yes…some optical frames. I’ve been a bit obsessed with optical frames of late (having recently discovered that I need glasses). What I’ve discovered is that there are endless styles to choose from. It can be overwhelming and finding the right pair (or two for good measure) is essential. These aren’t the ones that I chose, but I do love the shape and colour.
