I’m pleased to say there’s a lot more loving than loathing going on, although it’s been a week-and-a-half of feeling like I have the winter blues. Find out why, below:
I’m in love with wearing anything made of linen. It’s a smart choice for super hot days, it breathes well and you can get away without having to do any ironing.
I’m finally on top of deadlines, which makes looking at my fully booked diary a lot less scary.
Chinese New Year: I know that the official day has been and gone, but I always relish this time of the year as a legitimate excuse to buy new clothes in-keeping with tradition of course! It’s also an opportunity to eat lots of food.
Magnetic, the latest installment from Karen Walker has just shown at NYFW (pictured). The rich jewel tones are totally up my alley and I can’t get past that lightning-esque print. It’s definitely something to look forward to mid-winter when it drops in NZ.
Hassle free Fridays: I love it when the end of the week rolls by, deadlines have been met and it becomes an allocated ‘tidy-my-desk/ admin day.’
Plants: I now work in an open-plan office, which means there is nowhere (and I mean nowhere) to hide. Utter a word and the entire room will hear you. Whisper…and people will wonder what you’re trying to hide; turn around and there’s a room full of people who might stare straight back at you. In order to create a bit of privacy I bought some plants to create a natural fortress around me. One has already died, but I’m particularly impressed by the huge Mother-in-law’s tongue. With its height and relatively thick leaves it provides excellent coverage and barely needs watering. That’s my kinda plant! Plus, plants in the office help with fatigue…
The essence of life is having more time. Our dishwasher broke recently and we’ve had to do our dishes by hand. Getting it fixed has been music to my ears, granted, I’ve never been a fan of unloading the washer once it’s finished—it’s far too overwhelming.
Jason Lingard is a designer I discovered last year when I bought the best black linen trousers / culottes I have ever owned. It’s fun to play with the proportions of the drape and the look transforms dramatically depending on what I pair them with. He describes his aesthetic as neo-gothic (check out his website here where you’re likely to nab some sales). His Omen collection is also due out soon.
Short hair: Who knew it could feel so good—especially in this heat!
While I love the heat, when temperatures soar above 25 degrees I retreat inside, draw the curtains and sit in the dark like a vampire.
Summer ills: I’ve had the longest running cold for the best part of two weeks. My brain is starting to feel like a pumice stone and is blocking my hearing a little. On top of which, the dry heat irritates an already severely dry sore throat which causes the kind of coughing that makes you think you’re about to vomit up your own tonsils.
Headphone hair: I wear headphones for a living which allow me to listen to audio and edit at a reasonable volume. The downside is that with short hair my ‘headphone hair’ becomes even more noticeable. At times it’s comparable to hat hair, or worse, helmet hair.
