It always pays to smell good. And if I ever rush out the door and forget to spritz on some perfume I can’t help but feel at odds, and almost naked for the rest of the day. The right scent can lift your mood and enhance the way you feel, and conversely, the wrong scent can even make you feel sick to your stomach.
Case in point: When I was in high school my boyfriend bought me a bottle of Opium by Yves Saint Laurent. I find it overly powdery and musty and the fragrance makes me nauseous every time I smell it (even on someone else). I headed to an arts festival show earlier this year and was trapped in the theatre for 2.5 hours sitting behind a woman who was wearing it. I enjoyed the show, but I couldn’t wait to leave and escape from the heady aroma of Opium.
The same goes for Marc Jacobs Lola. A few years back, while heading through Duty Free I made the mistake of buying the biggest bottle that I could find. But as soon as I tried it on back home there was a metallic note in it that I just couldn’t stomach. I ended up giving the entire bottle away.
I’ve been on the hunt for a new scent for almost a year and have had my eye on Miu Miu’s debut parfum, released last August. I’m ecstatic that it has finally come to New Zealand.
When buying a perfume, I often find that I’m emotionally connected with the packaging and my jaw dropped as soon as I opened the box. The ceramic bottle is as beautiful in person as I had hoped, and the scent doesn’t disappoint.
Described as unique, bright, youthful and sophisticated, Miu Miu also feels quite sexy. I’m not ordinarily a floral kind of girl and tend to choose bright fruity scents, but this one is definitely a winner.
I wore it for the first time last weekend and made the mistake of being a little too liberal, just in case the scent faded. It was potent, so keep in mind that a little goes a long way.
Composed of Jasmine, rose and green notes, it also has the addition of pepper and woody aromas of oud and settles into quite an intense warm scent, which makes it perfect for winter and great for evening, too. (On me, I noticed the florals and the woody notes, but not so much the green or pepper).
I haven’t worn this one to work yet, so I’m not sure if it’s likely to be office-friendly, but I might be bold and try a light spray and see how I go.
