Not all street style books are created equally. There are those that fail to hit the mark, devoid of that human connection that draws your eye into the picture. Scott Schuman on the other hand, (of The Sartorialist blog), is a photographer who continues to nail it, each and every time.
Having had his previous publications, The Sartorialist, and Closer in my collection for years now, his third installment, The Sartorialist X was highly anticipated (and between you and me), does not disappoint.
Schuman has an undeniable knack of composing beautiful images that tell a story. As one of the first street style photographers to take his editorial eye out to the streets, he reinvigorated the way that we all look at fashion today and perusing his books or even clicking through his blog, it’s hard not to get the feeling that he’s having a conversation with you—and he is—through his images.
Looking for more than just a pretty face, Schuman provides us with a glimpse into each of his subjects, whether it be outside a Paris Fashion Week show, or wandering through a heaving marketplace in Marrakesh.
The beauty of Schuman’s work is that it never feels contrived or overly-posed, but candid and spur-of-the-moment, regardless of whether he’s taken his subject to a location that illuminates the beautiful details in their clothing, or conversely, draws your eye to the simplicity of their outfit.
There is also a sense that he has formed a relationship with each person, and he has an acute ability to effortlessly capture people in motion, causing the viewer to wonder where that person might have come from, and where they might be going.
Schuman states from the outset that style isn’t about designer garments, but the way in which the wearer tells their own story through their clothing. This is what makes his work so accessible—it is equal parts documentary photography, as it is about street style.
With a clean, uncluttered layout the photographs and his subjects have a chance to breathe.
In this edition, Schuman utilizes white space to great effect. The curation of The Sartorialist X showcases the breadth of his work, providing more of a complete picture into his vision, and even includes his expansion into the world of instagram, which has allowed him to gain traction outside of his street style photography.
The Sartorialist X is visually inspiring, and even more than that, it is visual poetry of the very best kind…
