I like to joke that next year’s must have accessory is a chair, the go-to item that will make sitting anywhere you please, feel like a breeze.
Need a break from the new stand-at-your-desk-scenario? Pull up a chair. Tired after trekking the length of CBD to get lunch for everyone on your office floor? Pull up a chair. Walked down the length of a runway for 10 seconds and feel like you just don’t give a rats anymore? Pull up a chair — just be sure to look cool while you’re doing it.
But seriously, the models who walked — and sat — down the runway at the Auckland Viaduct Event Centre for menswear label, French 83, proved that these clothes are designed for living in a collection comprised of smart, contemporary tailoring with clean lines, thoughtful detailing and sportswear-inspired suiting.
The French 83 man has an understated confidence and allure: he knows what he likes and dresses according to the situation, only, he decides what’s appropriate and when.
He’s a guy who can weather any storm and he’s wiser than his years. A fan of books, he switches between a kindle and weighty tomes because he wants something tangible to hold. He values history and watches art house films, and for the most part, he dots his i’s and cross his t’s. At least, that’s part of the illusion that he wants you to believe.
But just when you think you know him, he surprises you like a tornado that was never predicted in the weather forecast.
His playful side is offbeat and crazy, in fact, you’re totally taken aback. Now he laughs at all of your jokes and makes up a few funny ones, himself. He kicks back, puts on some jazz — vinyl, of course — followed by a dash of post-modern punk, which you never EVER saw coming.
To top it off, he throws in some dance moves (that may not be so smooth), yet you’re still compelled to think, ‘this is the guy I want to party with…for the rest of my life.’ Later, he drops you home on the back of his (push) bike, because he’s socially and environmentally conscious.
The French 83 man is an everyday gentleman, an intelligent chameleon — a take-anywhere kinda guy. He’s cooler than a slice of frozen banana melting on a park bench in a 45 degree heat…and he’ll always keep you guessing!

NB: One of the outfits that I didn’t get a chance to shoot was a printed bomber co-ord, which was fun and oh-so covetable! The tailoring in this collection was beautiful and designer Nicole Wesseling really knows how to create wearable, smart, timeless contemporary pieces that will work for a variety of personalities and wardrobe demands.
