“A woman who doesn’t wear perfume has no future.” ― Coco Chanel
Add to this, that a wise woman knows that she’s onto a good thing when her perfume doesn’t smell like it dribbled out of a cat’s private parts.
Putting my three-year-old into a tepid bath on a balmy Auckland evening a few weekends ago, I swear I could smell cat urine, despite our friends not owning a cat. Hmm, I thought to myself. What could it be? Sniffing around I discovered that it was neither my child, nor the bath water. I looked above…I sniffed below…only to realise that it was in fact, me. Or rather, my perfume.
The sweet berry/ melon fragrance oil I brought with me because of its compact size had transformed into something spiky and acidic. It didn’t quite burn my eyes, but it was enough to make me want to crawl out of my own skin.
I hadn’t used the perfume oil before (and won’t be using it again), but I was amazed by how much a scent that was so summery and lovely the morning I applied it, had transformed so dramatically after a long, hot day spent largely roasting in the sun.
Which brings me to the kind of delight I felt upon discovering this dreamy bottle of Tokyo Milk — a recent purchase from WORLD. I had been eyeing up Tokyo Milk ‘Dark’ for some time, but couldn’t decide on a fragrance from the rather expansive range.
I tried on all three scents from Margot Elena’s latest Tokyo Milk ‘Light’ collection, which includes And Soul (a floral, woody white Musk), and Awaken Within (a citrus floral). But it was the power of Transformation that transported me to a peaceful place…and directly to the counter!
Packaged in green — the colour of harmony, renewal, nature, and for the Japanese —eternal life, it’s the kind of scent that immediately makes me feel both comforted and energized. The fragrance notes are mandarin, tuberose, amber, earth and white clay, but to my nose I definitely smell a soft vanilla undertone that’s sweet without being sickly. It’s also delicately floral— I’m not one for strong floral scents — with a hint of fresh fruit.
This is the perfect Spring/ Summer fragrance that’s light enough for everyday wear without overpowering an office situation. The scent lasts all day and softens even more throughout the day in a beautifully alluring way. The bottle is slimline, which makes it convenient for travel and I’ll be using it all summer long —whether the sun comes out or not — until I cross over to the dark side and make the transition to one of Tokyo Milk’s more heady perfumes, possibly this one.
